Win for Western Mass Destruction

Pioneer Valley Roller Derby visits Newark, New Jersey September 25, 2009
The teams of Pioneer Valley Roller Derby were hosted in a double header bout held by the new WFTDA apprentice league Garden State Roller Girls. The Branch Brook Skating Arena attracted a lively crowd, estimated around 250, for this Friday evening event featuring four 20-minute periods of men's and women's flat track derby.

Garden State's Ironbound Maidens (Green) took the track first against Pioneer Valley's Western Mass Destruction (Black). GSR's jammer, Lixxie Stixx came out of the gate strong in the first jam with a double grand slam after a major cut track landed WMD's co-captain, Nora Morse, in the box during her initial pass. After GSR's Jenna Von Fury visited the box part way through the second jam, the tables turned and Western Mass took a steady approach to take the lead by the end of the fifth jam with noted light footwork by jammers Chickadee Struction and Clam Jammer. Co-captain Pink Panzer often worked her pivot role as last line of defense for the ladies in black and newcomers Surly Mental and Cali Burr showed positive gains, especially in offensive play for PVRD in this first period. Western Mass took lead jammer in nine of the first period's 12 jams. Lead would bounce back and forth between the two teams in a tight first half that ended with WMD in a marginal 29-26 lead at the half.

Western Mass returned to the second period with a big start of 8 points by Nora Morse - a grand slam while a strong PVRD pack (Panzer, Gnome Ercy, Chickadee, and Big Vinny's Kid) held back Lixxie Stixx and another three after Lixxie broke through. From that point the WMDs didn't look back. The second period was higher scoring for only WMD as Garden State pulled another 22 points, but the Destruction dominated with 47 points. Taking lead another nine times in the second period's 12 jams, Western Mass Destruction's blockers kept Garden State to scoreless or to single pass jams for the remainder of the game while WMD's jammers scored in second passes four times. Strong walls by regular pivots Panzer and Ballistic Miss L as well as blocking action from regular jammers Morse, Chickadee, and Clam kept powerful Jersey blockers at bay. Regular power-blockers Bitches Bruze and Discipline & Punisher rounded out winning packs. Solid front walls from the Ironbound Maidens troubled WMD jammers as WMD blockers worked to control the pack in the back and outside, but were broken up with more offensive plays in the second half.

New to the jammer lineup this year, Clam Jammer tied for best +/- jammer stats with Chickadee Struction in the first period with all four of PVRD's jammers skating an equal number of jams. Both jammers pulled a positive advancement of 6 points for the team in the first period with Clam racking up 14 points and Chickadee 12. WMD's coaches Dr. Spankenstein and Vanessasary Force played the bench well and made adjustments in the second period to leverage skater strengths. All of the WMD jammers took time in the pack as blockers as well, a testament to the well rounded play of the team. Recent additions to the lineup, Surly Mental and Cat O'Mighty, showed strong blocker point gains in the first period, while Big Vinny's Kid and Gnome Mercy showed solid strength in the second.

Jammer Stats:
Clam Jammer - 38 points in 6 jams, Lead all 6 times

New York Shock Exchange Vs. PVRD's Dirty Dozen
For those who love a good rivalry - Patriots/Giants, Red Sox/Yankees - the Dirty Dozen of Massachusetts' Pioneer Valley and the Shock Exchange of New York are becoming the fiercest competition on wheels. The underdog Dozen, with no shortage of blood and sweat, fell for a fifth time to the relentless Shock Exchange 73-56 in what was PVRD's final bout of the season at The Branch Brook Skating Arena in Newark, New Jersey.
Coach Nora Morse sent the fleet footed Jurasskick Park out to start on the jam line and he took lead jammer to get 3 points behind Dirty's first year pivot Will Jettison. After Davy Jones added to the total it was the Exhchange's Mothra and then Teen Wolf who took the lead 6-5 at 4:30 of the first half. Mothra scored big again followed by a 14 point frame by Wolfgang Von Stom behind strong blocking by Maulin' Brando, Abe Drinkin', Filthy McNasty, and rookies Red Five and Ronnie Mako.

With a commanding 32-7 lead for the Shock and just over nine minutes to play in the period, penalties started to turn against them. The remaining seven jams went to the Dirty Dozen behind jammers Jurasskick, Davy Jones and captain Dr. Spankenstein who turned in 4 points on the last race. PVRD's first year blockers Snidely Rinkrash, Sideswipe, and Fresh Eddie Fresh along side veterans Rollin' Redshirt, Brutus Priest, Bazooka Joe and The Rev led the way to knock the score down to 40-30 at the half.

Even with two Shockers in the box to start the second period the Dozen was unable to convert and the first four jams went by without any points. After a major, Davy Jones was sent to the box as Jonathan R ended up with 7 points combined with a 4 point run by Mothra opening the lead back up to 51-30. Spankenstein got the scoring moving again followed by four points by Jurasskick , but along the way Bazooka Joe got caught in a multi-player pile-up that sent him to the penalty box with a bloody cut on the bridge of his nose.

The Dozen seemed to be closing in when Teen Wolf delivered a fourteen point blow that left the score at 66-38 with seven minutes to go. With no jammer on the track and then getting his feet savagely taken out on a low block by Darth Invader, Jurrasskick hurtled toward 8 points of his own. As the time wound down the Exchange clung to their lead and even as Jurrasskick and the Dirty Dozen pushed for 4 more points at the end it was the Shock Exchange 73-56 who remained undefeated in men's flat track roller derby.
