Dirty Dozen wins MDC 2010 Season Opener
03/27/2010
Pioneer Valley 117, Harm City 73 -- In the kickoff bout of the first Men's Derby Coalition regular season, Pioneer Valley's Dirty Dozen kept the margin just out of single-jam range for the majority of the first half, put up a crushing, halftime-spanning 40-2 run, and solidified their advantage in the second to beat Harm City by 44 points.
Pioneer Valley benefitted from a number of new faces -- particularly
Mars Travolta, Damage and Mongo -- along with the long-delayed debut of
ace jammer Jurasskick Park, who had been rostered for the previous two
Harm City / Pioneer Valley bouts but ended up unable to play in either.
Harm City had debuts from Fo Wheel?, exclusively used on the jam line,
and Abe Froman, exclusively used in the pack.
The bout was fairly low scoring through most of the first half, with
Pioneer Valley holding on to a 25-15 lead with 13 minutes to play and
29-19 with ten minutes in the half, but the home team extended the
margin there with a big 25-2 run in the final 10 minutes. PVRD got a
particularly important momentum jam to finish the half as Davy Jones
put up a 10-0 on Justice Feelgood Marshall to move the score from 44-21
to 54-21 at the break.
As the second half opened, it looked as if PVRD had Harm City on
lockdown, allowing only 1 point while continuing their run up to 69-22
after 3 jams. Just when Homicide was on the ropes, though, they got a
much-needed powerjam when Mars Travolta joined a full PVRD box as
jammer and Homicide played it to the hilt with a huge 23-2 jam for
Carnage Asada -- their points in that single jam exceeding their entire
first-half total. That gave Homicide some energy and put the score at
71-45.
Pioneer Valley wasn't rattled, though, and Homicide would never again
get closer than that 26 point margin. Halfway through the second PVRD
had nearly doubled up Harm City at 91-49, and that 42 point margin
stayed more or less the same for the remainder of the clock time.
Homicide had the slimmest of prayers going into the final 2:30 with the
score 107-73 and enough time to squeeze two jams out of it, but a
jammer penalty on Homicide allowed Pioneer Valley's Dr. Spankenstein to
end with a 10-0 jam and burn the clock to give PVRD the 117-73 victory.
Davy Jones led PVRD with 45 points and a +40 JPD; Carnage Asada led HCH scoring with 25 points, while Quad led HCH JPD with -4. -- Justice Feelgood Marshall
