A Statement From Bazooka Joe
08/24/2009
We of Pioneer Valley Roller Derby would like to apologize to the fans and visiting teams who came to Greenfield on Saturday night expecting a roller derby game only to be disappointed. As you know, we were forced to cancel the double header due to unacceptable conditions with the floor. The already slippery sport court surface was made worse by humidity. Attempts were made to improve the grip, but the excessive moisture made it impossible to get any traction whatsoever. The team captains and referees determined that to play under such circumstances would be irresponsible. More than just sloppy and unappealing, the game play would have been dangerous for both the players and the audience.
Fans from Agawam to Greenfield and Boston to Albany came out to watch us skate and we were eager to play an exciting game for everyone. In addition, the visiting teams Lehigh Valley Roller Girls and Puget Sound Outcast came from great distances to make this possible. We are greatly disappointed that our supporters did not have a game to watch and our opponents a game to play. This disappointment is tempered by our great appreciation for the expressions of sympathy given by so many kind folks.
Thank you once again to all of our fans, sponsors, volunteers, referees, visiting teams and players. We have events in the works for the Fall, including a tie in with the premier of the roller Derby movie "Whip It", so please keep your eye on this site for updates on what we're up to.
Thank you,
Bazooka Joe
