A Bout to Remember: PVRD Debuts Longtime Brainchild

by D. Armstrong

08/28/2010

The Western Mass Destruction will be temporarily disassembling to form split squadrons consisting of the Quabbin Missile Crisis and the Florence Fightin' Gals. Northampton's Three County Fairgrounds will host the much-anticipated arrival of Pioneer Valley Roller Derby. The Arena Building at the Fairgrounds will house bouts that will include both men's and women's competition.

Practice camp at The Bunker, a scrimmage and preparation facility exclusive to PVRD, has many enthused skaters prepared to do battle with one and other, as they give the Pioneer Valley the opportunity to see a local rivalry unleash itself with action-packed athleticism.

The Florence Fightin' Gals will be led by captain - Clam Jammer - who has an interesting take on their bout: "We're kicking off a long term friendly rivalry. We're fighting to get that first blood. We have something to prove." She has promised physical play from her team in their debut. The opportunity for bragging rights is at stake, albeit among members of the same team.

Quabbin Missile Crisis captain - Ballistic Miss L - states, "It's really exciting. We've always dreamed of these home teams." While there will be two actual home teams, it is hoped that the local flavor of the extravaganza will attract a jam-packed audience. Audience members will get the chance to see a dream come true.

The evolution of this event has been in the works since the inception of PVRD, dating back almost four years.

The Dirty Dozen, who were the first to assemble among a small population of male roller derby teams, will add more excitement to Saturday's bill, as they take on the visiting Burlington Bombers. Team captain - Davey Jones - has the Dozen prepared for a fairly new Bombers team. "It's going to be interesting to see what they've got," he remarks, "We'll probably teach them a couple things." Burlington has participated in only a handful of bouts, but Jones promises a mutual level of gamesmanship

There is a very high level of respect among all who will partake in Saturday's event. PVRD is giving each fan the chance to experience the dedication and excitement that's involved in a roller derby bout.
